Abstract

The call for more sustainable products requires an entire consideration of all lifecycle phases. Besides the utilisation phase, the production phase influences environmental aspects to a huge share, depending on product type and lifetime. Most approaches only aim at a reactive optimisation during series production or take environmental aspects not until the production system development into account. The correlation of products and production systems and their effects on design decisions is not considered during the development. As a result, the question arises: How can an integrated development of both systems realise improve the sustainability? An analysis of mutual influences between both development processes is needed at first. Eversheim et al. therefor introduced correlation matrices that asses the mutual influence of activities, methods and technical systems with the required or generated information in both domains [Eversheim et al.]. Stoffels et al. developed a matrix that correlates the different phases of the product and production system development in order to find out where the influence is especially high [Stoffels et al.]. In early development phases there is a significant mutual influence of both domains, why integrated methods should be applied here. The product characteristics that constitute the desired properties require specific properties of the production system for the manufacture. Michaelis et al. developed an integrated view, where solutions of the production system interact with the product solutions in a process [Michaelis et al.]. The correlation reveals the importance of an integrated consideration and development of solutions for both systems, in order to increase sustainability of the production phase. An early assessment of product and production system solutions is the key in order to work out the best combination. Methods that address this issue are required and have to be integrated into the development process. The paper will focus on the activities in an integrated development process of products and production systems and will integrate new methods besides existing methods.
