Abstract

The analysis of technical systems is a central, but often underrated activity during the product development. Only a detailed understanding of design problems allows the design of a successful solution. There are studies on two different types of analysis in the literature – the functional analysis and the synthesis driven analysis. This paper presents an eye-tracking study in which these two analysis procedures are compared. The results show that the anal-ysis types are very similar on a micro scale but differ on the macro strategies and the content of the analysis. Studies on the macro strategies during analy-sis in engineering design should therefore always consider the synthesis.
